Frequently asked questions about loft conversions
A loft conversion can seem like a big undertaking, but the more you know what to expect the simpler you realise it is. Below are answers to the most commonly asked questions we get from clients about their loft conversion plans.
How much will my loft conversion cost?
On average, a loft conversion could cost between £30,000 and £50,000. The cost will vary depending on a number of factors, including:
- The type and size of loft conversion you want.
- The size of your property.
- The type of house you own.
- Any building regulations placed on your home – for example, if your property is a listed building or you live in a conservation area.
- Any additional installations or fixtures you would like to include.
- Whether you need planning permission.
How long will my loft conversion take?
On average a loft conversion will take between 6 and 8 weeks to complete.
Will I need planning permission?
Planning permission is not usually required, but there are a few exceptions. These include instances where the loft conversion exceeds 50 cubic centimetres, if you live in a listed property or a conservation area, or whether you or a previous owner have previously extended or altered the property amongst others. We will advise you whether you need to secure planning permission during our initial consultation.
Can I continue to live in the property during the loft conversion?
Yes. Our loft conversion team minimises noise, debris and disturbance as far as possible, enabling you to continue living in the house. Much of the work will be undertaken from the outside using scaffolding along the exterior of your home to further reduce disruption.
Is the loft conversion work guaranteed?
Yes. We offer a 10-year warranty on all our loft conversions so you know we are confident in our work and that you have made a reliable, long-term investment.
Do I need drawings and plans?
Our loft conversion specialists work with established, experienced architects who will prepare the necessary drawings and plans for your loft conversion. However, if you have your own preferred architect, we will gladly accommodate this.
Do you offer plumbing, electrical and carpentry services?
Yes, we do offer these services and can incorporate them into a tailored quote.
Can you decorate the loft?
Yes. We can arrange to decorate your loft conversion to your bespoke requirements. Simply let us know what you have in mind and we can include it in your quote.
What are the different types of loft conversions?
The types of loft conversion include rear dormer, L-shaped, mansard, hip to gable and Velux. See our Loft Conversions page for more information on what each type involves.
